COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
EMBOSSING MACHINE, IDENTIFICATION TAPE
(MANUALLY OPERATED)

1. SCOPE
This commercial item description covers manually operated portable office type machines for embossing alphanumeric symbols on plastic tape in the following tape width sizes, as specified.
Size 1 – 12.7 mm
Size 2 – 19.0 mm
2. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
2.1 The machine shall emboss symbols of the following height, Size 1 – 4.8 mm, Size 2 – 12.6 mm. A tolerance of + 0.8 and -0.4 mm shall be allowed. Measurements shall be as shown in Figure 1.
2.2 The tape width tolerance shall +/- 0.8 mm.
2.3 The embossing wheel shall contain the impression medium and shall be designed to enable the wheel to be installed or removed with common tools.
2.4 The machine shall contain the means to emboss upper case Gothic alphanumeric symbols. On tape, horizontal symbols shall be as shown in Figure 1.
2.5 Letter symbols shall include “A” thru “Z”. Numeric symbols shall include “0” thru “9”. The letter symbol “0” may serve as zero and “I” as one in vice versa. All machines shall include a period, a slash or dash. Special punctuation marks, symbols or signs shall be included, when specified.
2.6 The operating handle shall be of a suitable material, smooth finished.
2.7 The feed mechanism shall automatically advance the tape and assure proper spacing between symbols.
